See a Show, Share Your Thoughts

The Theater Community would like to invite anyone who attends a performance of any production listed on our Shows page to submit a review of the performance for publication on TheTheaterCommunity.com.

First preference and speediest review will be given to those attending opening night who are able to submit a review prior to curtain time for the second performance, since these reviews will provide timely information to the most prospective theater-goers. Second preference will go to a review of any performance submitted before the end of the run of the show. Within a reasonable period of time following the close of the show, all other reviews will be considered. Please be sure to indicate in your review, though, which performance or performances you’re basing your review on.

Guest Reviewer Submission Guidelines

  1. Be considerate.
    • The folks who produce these shows are your friends and neighbors. You might run into them at the grocery store later. Don’t say anything here you wouldn’t say there.
    • That doesn’t mean you can’t be critical of the show or the production. It just means:
      • "Eric Brandt struggled with his lines in Act II."
        not
      • "Eric Brandt was either too stupid or too lazy to memorize his lines for Act II."
  2. Be Original.
    • Please submit only material that you wrote, and that has not been and will not be published anywhere else, even on your own website or blog. The search engines frown on duplicate content, and The Theater Community doesn’t want to pick any fights over publication rights.
    • If you submit any images with your review (and please do, if you can!) please only submit images for which you own the copyright or have proper publication rights. Images will be credited to you.
  3. Be structured correctly.
    • Please submit your review either in the body of any email, with as much formatting as practical in that context, or as a Word, OpenOffice, or rich text file attachment.
    • Make sure your review is at least 400 words long and no more than 1500 words (not including HTML or CSS tags, or image captions).
  4. Include some information about yourself.
    • Your (real) first and last name. Your review will be posted under your byline.
    • Your website or blog address, and/or Twitter account, if you would like links back to your own web presence from TheTheaterCommunity.com. If you include links, they will be posted at least twice on this site.
      • It would be much appreciated if you could include a link to your review here on your own site if you’re published.
      • The back link is not a requirement, but definitely a source of good karma.
    • An Author Bio. The bio can be as short as a sentence or two, but not more than a paragraph.
    • In the interest of full disclosure, please note if you’re affiliated with any particular theater group or groups.
    • For example:
      • "Eric Brandt lives in Schofield, WI and works as a database developer. In addition to being a a frequent theater goer, he has acted and directed for Wausau Community Theatre and has been on staff for productions by Oasis Theater Ensemble and the Everest Academy for the Arts. In general, he prefers red wine to white. You can read more of his thoughts on theater at TheTheaterCommunity.com."
  5. Submit your review via email to Eric [dot] Brandt [at] TheTheaterCommunity [dot] com.
  6. The Theater Community reserves the right to edit simple, obvious typographical or spelling errors without consultation. The Theater Community also stipulates that no substantial content changes will be made without talking it over with the author via email, at the very least.
  7. The Theater Community reserves the right to refuse to publish any submission, with or without a particularly good reason. An effort will be made to provide a reasoned explanation for any refusal to publish via email, but no promise thereof is implied.
