So, it turns out that actually being in a community theater show makes it really hard to maintain a website about participating in community theater.

Wausau Community Theatre’s McGuffin is a joint fundraiser with the Marathon County Literacy Council and it hits the stage tonight and tomorrow. When it’s done, I’ll have a little more quality time to spend with y’all.

Also this weekend, CWCT’s Pinkalicious – The Musical, directed by Abe Gabor, who has also recently signed on as Technical Director for the Everest Academy for the Arts’ production of Ten November, coming up in October. I’ll be directing that project, so you’ll likely see more about it here as the dates draw nearer.

That’s going to have to do for now. Have a great weekend! Read Full Article −>

Central Wisconsin Children’s Theatre (CWCT) has updated their calendar since we first took a peek at their season lineup. As the dates draw nearer, Beauty & the Beast is out and Little Mermaid is being pushed back into the summer months, possibly the June 21-23, 2012, weekend that Beauty & the Beast was originally slotted in. Stay tuned to the Shows page for the most up to date scheduling available.

On the other hand, tickets for both this weekend’s production of Annie, in Amherst, and next weekend’s production of Pinkalicious – The Musical, in Wausau, are currently on sale at ShowTix4U.com. Move fast, though. The Friday night performance of Annie is sold out as of this writing and there are very few tickets available for the other shows. Pinkalicious is selling fast, too, so don’t wait!

And just like that, we’re into February already, and there are two shows right around the corner.

First up, over the weekend, is cwACT’s production of The Philadelphia Story. As a long time fan of the 1940 film with Katharine Hepburn, I was pretty darned excited to be a part of the show back in 2008 when Wausau Community Theatre produced it. Funny, funny stuff that you just shouldn’t miss.

Coincidentally enough, that 2008 WCT production I was in was directed by Scott Fritsche, co-founder of Artista! Players and co-director of their upcoming production of Love Letters which opens next Monday night. Love Letters has an interesting format, staged with two characters reading the letters they’ve written to each other over the course of a 50 year relationship.

This play has nothing in the world to do with HIV or AIDS. There was a movie in 1993 called Philadelphia with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, and yes, that movie was about a lawyer with HIV. There is also a TV show called It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which is a sitcom starring Danny DeVito, and, for that matter, there was a not very good time travel movie in 1984 called Read Full Article −>

It’s the first round up of the New Year, and here it is, late!

The last few weeks have been pretty quiet for local theater, what with the holidays and all, but the spring frenzy is starting up, and it’s a kick start. UWMC has their production of Stop Kiss this weekend, and then auditions for Milwaukee Vibrator – The Musical right away next week. A "Milwaukee Vibrator", for those who may wonder, is a euphemism for a Harley Davidson motorcycle. If you wonder why, you need a ride on a Harley.

I’ve had this offer open for a long time now, with no takers, but I’ll say it again. If you go see Stop Kiss, let your friends know what you thought of it and send in a review of the show!

Call the Office of Student Services at 715-261-6235 for tickets, or purchase them at the door.

As fair warning to those concerned, this show does include some explicit language. So leave the kids at home.

Although the central relationship in this show is a growing interest between two women, and the driving event in the action is an assault they suffer when they are seen kissing in public, this isn’t a show about homosexuality, or about gay-bashing. The New York Times’ Ben Brantley described it as, “a gentle, affectionate work, with a blithe sense of comedy that brings to mind early episodes of ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show.’ Imagine Rhoda and Mary slowly Read Full Article −>

This weekend, of course, there’s not a thing going on in local theater. As it should be.

Today, though, marks the official observation of the 2012 December Solstice, which is the Winter Solstice in this hemisphere and the Summer Solstice south of the equator. The exact moment of the solstice actually occurred at 11:30 pm last night in the Central Time Zone, but the date is marked by UTC (a lot like Greenwich Mean Time), and by that standard, the solstice happened on the 22nd. A few more minutes of daylight are just around the corner.

This is also the third day of Hanukkah, which began at sunset on Tuesday the 20th this year.

Festivus is tomorrow, December 23rd. There’s still time to put up your pole. I’m a little disappointed in you for not having it up already, but we’ll talk about that after dinner.

Saturday, the 24th, is Christmas Eve, one of the few observances in modern Christianity of the liturgical day, which begins at sunset, and Sunday is Christmas Day, which serves as a reminder to residents of Wisconsin that Read Full Article −>

It’s that time of year. Last weekend, we had Artista! Players’ Christmas spoof, The Christmas Carol Murders, and this weekend it’s Wausau Community Theatre’s annual production of A Christmas Carol. It’s like fruitcake. Endless variations, and only available once a year.

With an eye toward the New Year, there are Read Full Article −>
