Wausau Theater Groups
There are five theater groups in Wausau that offer opportunities for full participation to the general community.
- Wausau Community Theater (WCT)
- Oasis Theater Ensemble (Oasis)
- Central Wisconsin Children’s Theatre (CWCT)
- UW-Marathon County Theatre (UWMC)
- Everest Academy of the Arts (The Academy)
Community Benefit Organizations (and the University)
Each year, WCT produces about seven shows, usually a mixture of big musicals, small musicals and straight plays. Oasis, CWCT and UWMC each generally put on two to three shows a year. Oasis tends to do straight plays, while CWCT and UWMC may do a little of each. As of this writing, the Academy is planning on producing one show a year, in the summer, and they like the great big, splashy musicals! Whether you’re interested in auditioning for a show, lending a hand in the shop, or learning a thing or two about stage make-up, there are opportunities in all aspects of show production through each of these organizations. You can get contact information from each through their websites, linked here in the Theater Group Links list in the sidebar.
Beyond production related volunteer opportunities, WCT, Oasis and CWCT have on-going, year round, off-stage volunteer opportunities that are not related to specific shows.
Local Schools
In addition to these community groups, Wausau East, Wausau West and DC Everest High Schools all have very active theater programs and will seldom, if ever, turn away volunteers interested in lending a helping hand. So, too, do many of the area elementary, middle and junior high schools. If you’ve ever heard your kids or their friends talking about a school play, odds are there’s a drama program nearby looking for help! Just contact the respective school offices to find out who to talk to about volunteering. Of course, when working with schools, most community volunteers will be working in backstage and off-stage capacities. Working with the school drama programs is a great way to get an introduction to theater, and to be involved with your kids at the same time.
Last, but not least, the Central Wisconsin Educational Theatre Alliance (CWETA) deserves a mention. CWETA puts on one show every two years, usually in mid-winter. Auditions for CWETA shows are conducted at all of the local high schools that choose to participate in the CWETA project, and their shows have been put on at a number of Wausau area high schools and at the Grand Theater on ArtsBlock. Since auditions aren’t open to the general public, they won’t be posted here, but given the level of talent and the production value that their shows have historically demonstrated, they will absolutely be listed on the Shows page as they come up!
